Can I use an expired ID in California?
Certain identification documents may still be accepted under California notarial law if they were issued within the last five years, depending on the type of ID presented. Please contact us in advance so we may review your situation before the appointment.
Can I use a digital ID?
No. California does not permit digital ID for notarization. For in-person notarizations, the signer must present acceptable physical identification that complies with state requirements.
Can I complete a notarization over the internet or by phone in California?
No. California does not permit Remote Online Notarization (RON). The signer must personally appear before the Notary Public at the time of notarization.
What if I do not have valid identification?
Depending on the circumstances, you may be able to use one or two credible witnesses in accordance with California notarial law. Please contact us in advance so we can determine whether this option is available in your situation.
When are credible witnesses needed?
Credible witnesses may be used when a signer does not have acceptable identification and cannot reasonably obtain it.
